Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA) Youth Action Group:

Horizons’ Environmental Prevention Youth Action Groups have been aligned to support the citywide San Francisco Prevention Coalition initiatives through youth-led work at the neighborhood level using the evidence based Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol program model and framework.

Each Youth Action Group will design and carry out campaigns and projects that stem from their individual program modules, while supporting the overall Coalition campaign and workplan. Campaigns and initiatives have included counter-advertising campaigns, store makeovers, and policy work including resolution development, adoption, and advocacy.

Program Summary

The Media Messaging / Audio Production classes are designed to explore and conduct critical analysis of how media messaging (music, advertising, videos, social media, etc.) influences youth perceptions, attitudes, and behavior towards alcohol and drugs. As one of Horizons’ CMCA Youth Action Groups, youth are trained in environmental prevention principles and strategies and explore a variety of systems such as family, cultural and community norms, access, perceptions and behaviors that shape the way that youth respond to underage and binge drinking.

Through a series of multi-media trainings and Audio Production skill building activities, youth compose, produce, record, and in many cases, perform, their own music as part of a neighborhood campaign aimed to educate youth on the impact that alcohol has in the family, amongst their peers, and within their music.
