The program aims to provide an interactive space for youth development and creative group process through training and participation in the arts, supplemented by daily individual treatment, case management, academic support and life skills. MUA is a five-day per week, completely bilingual (Spanish) and bi-cultural program.
Daily group courses in Visual Arts, Crafts, Theater, Poetry, Music, Dance, Martial Arts, and Recreation Activities give the young people in our program a forum for creative expression and a platform to share their work, with one another and with the community, through end of semester exhibits and performances.
Individual support is provided in a number of ways. Trained and certified Counselors will work on site with each youth participant, providing a confidential space to meet and discuss their individual needs, which may range from simple advice, to substance abuse issues, to mental and emotional health concerns.
Participants who show a commitment to the program have the option of becoming members of a rotating Youth Advisory Board, where students are given Peer Leadership workshops, and take on program responsibilities, while being paid a stipend. Developing leadership from within is a central part of our program on a daily basis.
In addition, youth have the option of taking advantage of our academic tutoring center, which provides 4 -5 committed tutors per day to assist youth with their homework. Furthermore, case management services are also available to every young person at Mission Urban Arts.
Participants aged 17 and younger will receive Youth MUNI Passes for transportation!
